OCT East (东部华侨城) – The Shenzhen Resort That's Bigger Than You Think

What Is OCT East?

50|

I'll be honest — the first time someone told me OCT East was 9 square kilometers, I didn't really grasp what that meant until I tried to walk across it and gave up halfway. This place is enormous. Built in the hills of Yantian and opened in 2007 after three years of construction, it's three theme parks rolled into one resort complex, plus hotels, a temple, restaurants, the works.

51|

The three parks each feel like they belong to different resorts entirely. Knight Valley goes hard on roller coasters and thrill rides. Tea Stream Resort Valley is the opposite — tea gardens, European-style buildings, quiet boardwalks. Wind Valley is basically a golf course surrounded by hiking trails that disappear into clouds sitting in the hills (this is actually where the name comes from). Most people pick one per visit. Trying to do two in a day is ambitious. Doing all three is a mistake I made once and don't plan to repeat.

The Three Parks, Honestly Ranked

56|

Knight Valley is where most people start, and for good reason. The roller coasters here actually scared me, which doesn't happen often. There's a launch coaster that shoots you through tunnels carved into the hillside, and a tower ride that lifts you above the valley so you can see the whole property spread out below. In summer there's a water park section too. If you only have one day and you enjoy theme parks, this is the one.

57|

Tea Stream Resort Valley is what I'd pick for a lazy day. There are actual tea plantations, a fake-but-charming Tregenna Castle, and a small train that rolls through the hills. The gardens are well-maintained and it doesn't feel as manufactured as it sounds. I spent a whole afternoon here just walking and reading on a bench near the wetland area. It's a good counterbalance if you're traveling with someone who doesn't want to be upside down on a coaster all day.

58|

Wind Valley is golf or hiking, take your pick. The 18-hole course is real — not a mini-golf situation — and even if you don't play, the trails up through the hills offer some of the better views in eastern Shenzhen. I saw a few people with proper hiking poles up there, which tells you the terrain earns it.

Getting There & Tickets

63|

It's about 30 km from downtown Shenzhen in the Yantian hills. Take Metro Line 2 or 8 to Huangbeiling or Yantian Road station, then grab bus M191 or M199. Didi works fine too and might save you the bus transfer headache. The resort has its own parking if you're driving.

64|

Tickets are separate for each park. Knight Valley and Tea Stream both charge admission individually, while Wind Valley is usually bundled with golf or hotel packages. Buy online before you go — Ctrip and Meituan typically shave 10-20% off the gate price. Check the official site for current opening hours since they shift by season, but figure on roughly 9:30 AM to 6:00 PM.

Things I Wish Someone Had Told Me

69|

Bring actual walking shoes. Not fashionable sneakers — the kind with grip. The paths between attractions involve real elevation change and more than once I watched people in sandals wobble down a hill looking miserable.

70|

Use the inter-park shuttles and the train. They exist for a reason. The distance between valleys is not trivial and you'll burn half your day's energy just getting between places.

71|

If you're visiting over a major holiday — National Day in October, Spring Festival, May Day — expect it to be packed. I went on the first day of National Day once and waited 45 minutes for a ride I could've walked onto in October on a Tuesday. Go on the edges of the holiday window if you can.

When to Go

76|

Spring (March to May) and fall (September to November) are the sweet spot. Comfortable temperatures, manageable humidity. Summer gets brutally hot and humid, past 33°C most days, though the water rides help. Winter is actually nice — cooler, less crowded, good hiking weather — but some of the water attractions scale back their hours.

What Else Is Nearby

81|

Dameisha Beach is about 10 km away and makes for a good evening plan after a park day. The seafood restaurants along Yantian Seafood Street are popular with people leaving OCT East — I had a solid Cantonese dinner there after a Tea Stream visit.

82|

Wutong Mountain sits to the west. At 943 meters it's Shenzhen's highest point and the trails give you a nice view back toward the resort and the coast beyond it.
