2. High-Speed Rail Guide

China's high-speed rail network is one of the most advanced in the world. Shenzhen is a major rail hub with excellent connections across China.

Key Routes from Shenzhen

Use the Trip.com app to book train tickets in English. Shenzhen North Railway Station (Shenzhenbei) is the main high-speed rail hub. Your passport serves as your ticket - no need for physical paper tickets.

3. Essential Mobile Apps

China is a digital-first country where mobile apps are essential for daily life. Downloading and setting up these apps before arrival will significantly enhance your travel experience.

Must-Have Apps:

Alipay & WeChat Pay

The absolute lifelines for daily transactions. Foreign visitors can now easily bind their international Visa or Mastercard directly to these apps for seamless QR code payments everywhere.

Navigation Apps

Apple Maps works perfectly in China with full English support. Amap (高德地图) is the most accurate local navigation app. Google Maps is largely inaccurate due to GPS shifting.

Translation Tools

Apple Translate (built into iOS) or DeepL for accurate translations. WeChat also has a powerful built-in camera translation feature for menus and signs.

Other helpful apps: DiDi (ride-hailing), Trip.com (hotel and train booking), Pleco (Chinese dictionary), and a VPN (research and install before arrival).

4. Crossing to Hong Kong

Shenzhen's border with Hong Kong offers multiple crossing options:

  • Luohu / Lo Wu: Most popular, connects to Hong Kong MTR. Open 6:30 AM - midnight.
  • Futian / Lok Ma Chau: Modern crossing with MTR connection. Open 6:30 AM - 10:30 PM.
  • Huanggang / Man Kam To: 24-hour crossing, less crowded.
  • Shenzhen Bay Port: Direct buses to Hong Kong International Airport.

Bring your passport and check visa requirements for Hong Kong. Many nationalities can enter Hong Kong visa-free.
