Chung Ying Street

A 250-meter street where China meets Hong Kong

Overview

55|

There aren't many places in the world where you can walk from one country to another in under a minute. Chung Ying Street is one of them. Tucked inside the border town of Shatoujiao on the Shenzhen side and Sha Tau Kok on the Hong Kong side, this narrow lane — barely 250 meters long and just a few meters wide — is split right down the middle by an international boundary. Stand on one sidewalk, you're in mainland China. Hop across to the other side, you're in the Hong Kong SAR.

56|

The name tells the story: "Chung Ying" (中英) means "China-Britain," a direct nod to the Second Convention of Peking in 1898, when the Qing dynasty leased the New Territories to Britain for 99 years. That treaty turned this sleepy market lane into a de facto international border. A stone marker from the original convention is still planted in the street — look for it near the midpoint.

57|

Honestly, photographs don't do the place justice. The border isn't some dramatic wall or fence. It's subtle. Different paving, different shop signs, a slight shift in the air. You'll feel it more than see it.

What to Do Here

63|

First thing: cross the border on foot. Seriously, that alone is the experience. Walk from the Shenzhen side to the Hong Kong side and back again. Watch how the shop signs change from simplified to traditional Chinese characters. Notice the different phone carriers advertised in the windows. Small stuff, but it hits different when you know what you're looking at.

64|

Shopping draws a lot of people here. The Hong Kong side has duty-free cosmetics, imported snacks, and international goods that tend to cost less than on the mainland. Herbal meds and local treats fill the shops on the Shenzhen side. A lot of locals come through just to stock up on Hong Kong products without actually crossing into the SAR through the formal checkpoint.

65|

Don't skip the historical markers. Plaques along both sides explain the border's history in English and Chinese. They're easy to miss if you're distracted by the shops, but they add a lot of context to what you're walking through.

Getting In (It's Not Straightforward)

70|

Here's where Chung Ying Street gets tricky. Foreign visitors need your passport plus a special border permit (边境通行证) to enter the Shatoujiao restricted area. You pick up the permit at the Shatoujiao border checkpoint. Budget about 30–60 minutes for the application. The form is simple and they usually issue it on the spot, but peak holiday periods can mean longer waits.

71|

Not every nationality gets through, unfortunately. Rules change. Check with the Shenzhen Public Security Bureau before you make the trip — it'll save you a wasted journey.

72|

Directions: Metro Line 8 to Shatoujiao Station, then a 10-minute walk to the border checkpoint. Taxis can drop you right at the checkpoint gate — just say 沙头角口岸 (Shātǒujiǎo kǒu'àn).

Important

77|

Bring your actual passport. Photocopies get turned away. Entry rules change often — verify before you go. Arrive early if you can; holiday queues at the permit office can exceed an hour. And don't wander beyond Chung Ying Street into the wider border zone unless you know it's permitted. Plainclothes officers keep an eye on this area.

When to Go

83|

Weekday mornings between October and December are ideal. You'll share the street with locals doing their daily shopping rather than fighting through tour groups. Weekends — especially during Chinese holidays — can get brutally crowded. If you can only come on a weekend, arrive before 10 AM.

Wutong Mountain is a solid option if you want a half-day hike with views back toward the border region. Dameisha Beach is also reasonably close for a post-border beach afternoon. If you're already in the Shatoujiao area, it makes sense to knock these out while you're there.
